Hair: why a vacuum alone does not get it

Hair works its way into carpet pile and upholstery and holds there statically. A vacuum lifts what is loose on the surface; the rest stays woven in and works its way back up a few days later — which is why it seems to reappear.

We work in two steps: first a rubber squeegee or a damp glove, which pulls hair out of the pile, and only then the vacuum with a turbo brush. The order is the whole difference; reversed, it gives the same result as doing nothing.

Smell: it cannot be covered up

Pet smell always has a source — bedding, the litter tray, textiles, a urine stain that dried months ago. Sprays mask it for a few hours and then you have both.

Protein stains are broken down with an enzyme cleaner; ordinary detergent only dilutes them and the source stays. We never use anything with ammonia: it smells like urine to the animal, which will mark the same spot again.

If the smell has soaked into walls, ceiling and upholstery and cleaning does not resolve it, ozone treatment is what is left — the flat then has to be ventilated for several hours and nobody, including the animal, can be in it meanwhile.

Allergens and dust mites

The allergen is not the hair but a protein from the animal's saliva and skin that sticks to the hair and travels around the flat on it. That is why sweeping solves nothing and why, in a household with an allergy, dry cleaning methods are used as little as possible.

Most of it sits in textiles: carpets, sofas, mattresses, curtains, the pet's bed. Vacuuming takes it off the surface; only extraction cleaning goes deeper — worth doing once a year where there is an allergy, not once every three.

Stains and what can be saved

A fresh stain is nearly always recoverable; a dried protein stain on a light carpet often is not, entirely. We say so in advance: promising to remove a stain that has been in the carpet for six months would mean taking money for something that will not work.

We never use hot water on protein stains — it sets them permanently. The same applies at home: blot with cold water and do not rub.

What is included and what is extra

A standard clean covers vacuuming, floors and surfaces, bathroom and kitchen. Cleaning the litter tray is a separate €10 item, carpet extraction is €2 per m², a sofa from €35 and a mattress from €17.50.

For a first booking in a household with a pet we suggest a deep clean with extraction, then moving to a weekly schedule — hair builds up faster than a fortnightly cycle can take it away.
