How to remove a stain from a sofa
Quick facts
| Time | 15 minutes for a fresh stain |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | medium |
| You need | cold water, microfibre, washing-up liquid |
| Our price | from 35 € for a sofa |
Almost every ruined sofa was ruined in the first minute, not by the stain. Hot water, rubbing and the wrong product turn a small mark into a large pale patch that is more visible than what you started with.
What you'll need
- cold water
- washing-up liquid diluted in water
- white vinegar for wine and coffee on durable fabric
- two clean white microfibre cloths
- a spray bottle
- paper towel
Step by step
- Blot immediately, do not rub. Press a dry cloth onto the stain to lift the liquid out. Rubbing pushes it into the padding and breaks the pile.
- Work from the edge inward. Circular movements spread a small stain into a wide ring that is harder to fix than the original.
- Use cold water only. Hot water sets protein stains — blood, milk, egg — permanently. This is the single most expensive mistake.
- Test on a hidden spot. Under a cushion or at the back. Thirty seconds that tells you whether the fabric will lose colour.
- Apply foam, not liquid. Whisk a little washing-up liquid into water and apply only the foam. Soaking the padding means days of drying and a smell.
- Rinse and dry. Go over it with a cloth dampened in clean water, then dry with paper towel and leave the window open. A damp sofa is what creates the musty smell people blame on the stain.
What to use on upholstery — and what not to
| Product | Good for | Do not use on |
|---|---|---|
| Cold water and microfibre | a fresh stain, the first response | hot water sets protein stains for good |
| Washing-up liquid diluted in water | grease and food residue | do not pour it on — apply foam only |
| Vinegar and water 1:1 | wine, coffee and tea on durable fabric | not on faux leather, silk or viscose |
| Isopropyl alcohol | marker, ink, ballpoint | always test on a hidden spot first |
How often to clean a sofa
Vacuum weekly; have the whole sofa extraction-cleaned every 12 to 18 months. With a pet or small children, once a year — at that point it is about allergens rather than appearance.
What to watch out for
- Coloured cloths transfer dye into light fabric. Use white ones.
- A hairdryer on a wet stain drives it deeper into the padding. Dry at room temperature with the window open.
- Check the care label: a sofa marked "S" must be cleaned with solvent only and water will leave a ring.
- Old protein stains on light fabric often cannot be fully removed. Better to know that before you spend an afternoon on it.
When to leave it to a professional
Extraction cleaning pulls dirt out of the padding rather than moving it around, which is the difference that matters on an old stain. A two-seater starts at 35 € — see upholstery and carpet cleaning. If the stain is fresh, call the same day: the odds drop sharply after it dries.
